Pavelkas in California
   Posted Fri March 19, 2021
My father and his family knew Sheila (Pavelka) Hansen long before I did, but I was so happy to have the chance to share a meal and a night at the Bridgeport Bakery during the summer of 2017. Sheila, Sandy, Ron, Gloria, Pam, Dan and some of their bakery assistants helped some California high school journalists and their adviser feel like professional donut makers for one night. It was magic. Sheila was right there listening to the stories and making jokes. We had so much fun that night and my family tree came alive because of that experience. It was especially sweet not only because of the sugar in the donuts, but because of the graciousness of Sheila and the rest who gave up their evening to share it with us...and because I had lost my father’s sisters, my aunts, and my grandparents, so having that Chicago Pavelka connection was extra special. I am sure that all of those folks were standing at the pearly gates waiting with some fresh nutroll and poppyseed roll to greet Sheila upon arrival. What a reunion that must have been! Thank you, Sheila for making me and my students feel loved and welcomed while we were in the windy city. I know you will continue to be present to those you loved in different ways and that your presence in their lives made the living richer. Sending prayers to all of the Pavelkas and the Hansens during this time of grief. We hope that the memories of laughter will continue to make you smile in the days and years to come and provide comfort for you during this difficult time. God bless!
