Donald "Pops" Charles Fernbach

Donald Charles Fernbach, born December 1, 1936, passed away on April 25, 2025. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Donald will be remembered for his humor, kindness, and his lifelong mission to make people smile.

Donald was preceded in death by his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Barbara Fernbach, who passed away in 2017. Together they built a loving family and shared a lifetime of memories.

He is survived by his three children: Michael Fernbach, Laura Fernbach, and David Fernbach (Cyndi). He was a proud grandfather to Daniel, Caitlin, Mason, Kaden, Andrew, and Charles. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Aundrea and Marcellus, along with his “adopted” great-grandchild, Logan.

Donald proudly served in the United States Army and later retired from Union Pacific Railroad. He was a very proud Irishman, known for his warm personality, quick wit, and playful sense of humor. Fondly called “Pops” by many, he had a special love for children, who were naturally drawn to his fun, playful spirit.

He absolutely loved music, especially jazz and blues, and often said his goal in life was to make people smile — something he did effortlessly for everyone who knew him. Donald was also well known in the Bridgeport neighborhood for his large front-yard gnome collection. Many neighbors would stop by to see the beloved “gnome garden,” which reflected his fun-loving personality and brought joy to passersby.

His initials, DCF — the same as his grandfather — were something he often joked stood for “Damn Crazy Fool,” a phrase that captured his playful humor and lighthearted spirit.

Donald will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for his laughter, generosity, and the happiness he brought into the lives of others.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Irish style on May 16 at 2:00 PM at the VFW, 3202 S. May St., Chicago, IL 60608. Family and friends are invited to attend as we remember and honor Donald’s life in the fun and happy way he lived it. Guests are encouraged to wear something green or something Irish in his honor.
