Theris "Terry" Gabinski, born November 30th, 1938, passed away peacefully on April 8th, 2026, surrounded by the love of his two children at the age of 87.
Theris was known for his love of his family, his city, his Polish heritage, his mastery of both story telling and comedic timing, and his generosity . He leaves behind him a legacy of laughter, love, service, and fiercely loyal friendship; he will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know hm.
Theris had a deep love and thirst for knowledge. He studied chemistry at Northern Illinois University, and achieved a masters degree in education from Loyola University Chicago; culminating in his early career teaching high school math and chemistry. He dedicated his life to service, first as a teacher and then to his beloved home of Chicago as a member of the City Council. Under the guidance of his late friend Congressman Rostenkowski, Theris was elected as the Alderman to the 32nd Ward in 1969 and served in that role until his retirement in 1998. He served his community as both Alderman and Vice Mayor from 1988 through 1998 and as Ward Committeeman from 1988 through his retirement from the political sphere in 2008.
Most of all, Theris loved his family. He spent countless hours sharing his love of knowledge through discussing historic battles with his son, visiting historic landmarks, and spending countless hours discussing music. He introduced his daughter to reading and fostered her love of independent study from a young age, often remarking on how the everyday chemistry of cooking is overlooked while serving as the food critic for her many recipes. His friends knew him as the life at every party. He found joy in making others laugh while sharing memories and stories from throughout his life. He was always there with a listening ear or a helping hand.
Theris was a bright light in the lives of those he loved. He is preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Celeste. Theris is survived by his son, Cpl. Matthew Gabinski (USMC); his daughter, Molly Priorello (Gabinski); his brother, Roger Gabinski; his loving nieces, Sara Gabinski and Kelly Barker (Gabinski); and his nephew, James Gabinski.
His kindness, zest for life and his unyielding love touched all who were lucky to have known and loved him.
Interment is Private.
